10 Things You Will Learn After Traveling in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia has a special place in my heart and I think it always will. When I first decided to try out traveling, I told myself I wouldn't return to a place I had visited before until I had gone to all seven continents. Well, this summer I went back to Thailand for a second time. And during that trip I started to try to plan how I could get myself back there next summer. There is just something about that area that draws you back again and again. It could make you stay forever. Southeast Asia has also taught me many things. About myself, life, other cultures.[...]

Thailand Misadventure: Losing My Passport and Flying First Class

“We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey," - John Hope Franklin I was supposed to fly home on a Tuesday. Three days later and I was still wandering the streets of Bangkok, not by choice. I guess you should be careful what you wish for. Only days before leaving Koh Tao I was saying how desperately I wished I had more time in Thailand, how I really did not want to go home. I got what I wished for, just not under the circumstances that I was drea[...]

Goodbye Bangkok, Goodbye Thailand

"Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life." -Jack Kerouac I have a newfound love for Bangkok. Okay, so maybe I wouldn't call it love but I definitely feel more friendly about Bangkok than I did before. I first felt this feeling when I stepped off the plane from Hanoi. By the time I was in the taxi, speeding down the highway, it felt like all of my stress and worry had disappeared. That quickly. And I realized that this was how I felt every time that I arrived in Bangkok. Whether it's becaus[...]

My Six Week Adventure with Chopsticks

"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home." -James Michener Six weeks ago, if I was to get served a meal with chopsticks at home I would shamelessly smile, head high and say 'oh no, could I have a fork please?' and think nothing of it. Growing up I was a picky eater.  I detested most of the Western food that filled our fridge, let alone any type of internatinal cuisine. Put something in front of me that smelled funny, looked strange or even had a weird name and I would turn up my nose and re[...]

A Lady Named Tip

Chiang Mai is still, without a doubt, one of my favorite cities. After arriving in the city in the early hours of Friday morning, I instantly remembered why I had fallen in love with this place last summer. The atmosphere is relaxed, the locals are friendlier and the travelers kind.. and crazy, which only adds to the fun. Never before have I returned to a city that I travelled in, but Chiang Mai is truly one of a kind. Almost immediately after dropping our bags, I insisted that we must pay a visit to the smoothie lady. When she saw me, her eyes got wide and she ex[...]

Tips, Planning and Packing

Packing for Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” - Maya Angelou Well, today is the day! In eleven hours I will be stepping on a plane that will take me away to Thailand, alongside a friend that I met last year at the beginning of my first year of university. The weeks leading up to travel are some of my favorite weeks. They are rushed, stressful, and exciting. Paperwork is being done, photocopies are bei[...]

Koh Phi Phi, Thailand.

As my first year of university comes to an end and summer approaches, my mind is buzzing with ideas of new travel adventures for the coming months. A friend and I have been planning a one to two month trip of South East Asia, starting with some of the islands in the south of Thailand and moving on to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Northern Thailand. However, as money is an issue, this isn't an absolute certainty quite yet. Fingers crossed though, everybody! As these new plans are coming into place, I've been remembering my trip to Thailand last summer. I have writte[...]

Elephant Nature Park Photo Collection.

A visual glimpse into my week spent at Elephant Nature Park in Northern Thailand. Sometimes a photo can share an even greater story than the words behind it. But don't worry, if you're a reader - you can read all about it over here![...]

Volunteering At The Elephant Nature Park In Thailand

The Elephant Nature Park truly is a heaven on earth not only for elephants but cats, dogs, horses, water buffalo and a single moon bear. Lek, the founder of ENP has devoted her life to rescuing Thailand's mistreated animals, teaching better care techniques, delivering medicines for the hill tribes and village animals putting an end to the abuse of animals in Thailand. Many people consider Lek to be the Jane Goodall of Thailand. "Welcome to Jurassic Park," our driver jokes as we drive down the winding road, surrounded by trees, mountains and, in the distance, el[...]

So it turns out you do start forgetting your own age once you push thirty. Despite that, thirty four has been pretty good to me so far.

It’s been a year since I moved to the comox valley - and almost as long since I posted on here!

I look back on the intentions I was calling in at the end of 2022: to live by the water, to have more female friendships, more love, simplicity, a fun + flexible routine - and I find myself exactly where I wanted to be.

At that time I was in Mexico after being laid off, life coaching and having a good time, planning out my next move and spending a lot of time thinking about moving to Vancouver or Vancouver island.

By the end of January I had a job and a week later I was on the island.

This past year has been a practice to learn how to live in and enjoy just being here before racing off to the next thing. We can be so quick to jump from one big goal to the next that we don’t take time to slow down and actually sit in it and appreciate it for a while.

So what have I been doing since I moved here?

I’ve been playing with rescue cats and kittens every weekend

I’ve been racing to the ocean with binoculars to try and see the whales when someone mentions they’re nearby

I’ve been waking up, pouring a coffee and walking in a cozy hoodie to the shore literally across the street

I’ve been checking out waterfalls, watching sunsets from my kayak, eating brunches, writing in cafes, walking through forests of old trees, taking ocean dips even in winter, making friends, trying out pottery, dancing, reading on beaches, going to shows, and generally just learning to be present and slow down long enough for me to catch up with myself.

I’m thinking that this year is going to look much the same and I’m pretty okay with that 🌊

Everyone needs alone time - not just your introvert friends!

I know not all of us LIKE spending time alone - but all of us NEED some regular alone time.

And check out all the epic perks of spending time alone. Who doesn’t want to know themselves and trust themselves more? Who doesn’t want to feel centered and grounded?

I’d argue that prioritizing time alone is one of the key contributors to living a life that feels good - without it, we lose access to this sacred, deeper connection to ourselves.

And when we lose that connection, we lose our way.

My hope is that this can be a space where you can learn how to and be inspired to spend more quality time with you, yourself and you.

Because after all, you shouldn’t be enjoying yourself ONLY when you’re with other people. Enjoying the time you spend alone means MORE happiness in life, MORE contentedness, MORE peace.

➡️If you’re someone struggling to enjoy spending time alone, scroll on down to my post from March 13th to find 14 ways to spend quality time with yourself.

➡️If you know your relationship with yourself has taken a hit and you want to work with a life coach to get it back and build a relationship with yourself that’s better than ever before, you’re in the right place. Send me a dm at @michellebelair_ to find out more!
